Tameside Striders Great Sporting Gesture
A magnificent sporting gesture in the over 70s league today (09.03.22) by Tameside Striders Blues and Tameside Striders Stripes. Manchester Corinthians were down to 5 fit players for their last two fixtures and both the Blues and the Stripes agreed to play 5 players themselves. It’s appreciated not only by the Corinthians but all the teams there today. It just shows the sporting quality of people playing in the GMWFL.
Well played Tameside Striders. Excellent team spirit and sportsmanship. A credit to the league.
Steve Hyde (Blackpool FC Senior Seasiders Secretary)
Hear, Hear. Sportsmanship at its finest.
Neil Griffiths (Secretary, Moston Brook FC)
Outstanding sportsmanship, well done guys.
Steve Colesby (Rochdale WFC)
Thanks guys. When we reach our age its more about friendship and fair play. We all like to win but there are more important things. Best wishes.
Colin Fielding (Tameside Striders)
Well said Colin. At our age we should all be grateful for being given the opportunity to play football again which years ago wasn’t possible because the facilities were not as available as they are today. So now this has given everybody a new lease of life.
We must also remember that it is not a win at all cost scenario as a lot of players play for their physical and mental health. That’s why a players welfare is and always has been the number one priority. Some people may think the rules in the GMWFL are strict but they are there for a reason and that is to protect us from injury being in an ageing environment.
The sportsmanship shown by Tameside Striders is immeasurable and I think overall all the teams in the GMWFL have adapted to the spirit at which the game is played at Heywood in a friendly and relaxed manner, which is credit to all the people that put an immense amount of time and effort into organising it. May it long continue.
Alan Graham (GMWFL Referee)
Well said Alan. Totally agree with you.
Colin Fielding (Tameside Striders)
As someone who suffered a potentially life threatening injury at Heywood, I will be forever grateful for the quality of referees at Heywood and the strictness of the rules. Winning should not be the number one consideration for ANY of us. It must always be the physical and mental well being of all we play with.
