GMWFL Representative Teams Compete In The WFLA Inter League Cup May 2024
The Greater Manchester Walking Football League representative teams in the over 60s, 65s and 70s age categories entered the Walking Football Leagues Alliance Inter League Cup on the weekend of 11th and 12th May.
Representative teams from all around the country and Wales competed in this third annual event. The GMWFL teams had various levels of success this year, with the standard of teams extremely high, especially the goalkeepers.
The new FA Walking Football LOTG were used in this tournament, with the four team offences for running effecting our younger age categories badly.
Over 60s
Our 60s team was managed by Peter Davenport, who unfortunately was unable to play through injury. He had a squad of eight players, which was reduced to seven after Dave Wandless suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury in the first fixture.
The 60s topped their Group A, winning two and drawing one of their three fixtures. They then played the runners up of Group B in a semi-final, Birmingham County WFL, losing 2-1.

Over 65s
The 65s team was managed by Simon Atherfold. They played five fixtures, winning three, drawing one and losing one, finishing in second place three points adrift of the winners, Birmingham County WFL.
Having six penalties awarded in five games didn’t help matters, despite keeper Ken Hitchell saving four of them. In the final fixture versus Birmingham County WFL, we conceded two penalties for running offences. In all honesty, we should have won this final fixture, with the opposition keeper saving his team on numerous occasions in this match. Scorers were Dennis Johnson 2, Bob Hartley 3 and Colin Myers 6.

Over 70s
Pete Hampson took over the management of the over 70s with a lot to live up to. This team had won this trophy for the last two consecutive years, and Pete hoped to make it a hat trick of wins this year.
He didn’t disappoint with three wins and a draw, topping the table by a one point margin over Oxfordshire WFL and without conceding a goal. This team were way above the standard of the opposition, playing a superb passing and space finding game and controlling possession, which the other teams had no answer for. Scorers were Allan Macleod 1, Alf Murphy 1, Chris Vickers 1 and Dave Jones 3.

Excellent report and thanks for the penalty saved comment, just a stretch too far but we need to slow down a little.
