Martin Dawson Trophy 2021
Martin Dawson Trophy 2021
With the Martin Dawson Trophy cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic it was good to see the return of this popular annual event. The tournament continues to grow, now in it’s 5th year, we initially had nine teams involved in 2016 and this year we had sixteen teams from all over the North of England.
The Martin Dawson Trophy 2021 saw sixteen teams compete in four groups of four teams. Twelve teams from the Greater Manchester Walking Football League and four guest teams made up the sixteen.
In Group A were Blackpool FC Senior Seasiders, Carlisle SOA, Halifax WFC and Sheffield WFC. In Group B were Moston Brook FC, Roach Dynamos, Rochdale AFC Striders and Wakefield Wanderers. Group C consisted of Bury Relics, Club Kingsmaid, Manchester Corinthians and Rochdale AFC Strollers. In the final Group D were Blackburn Rovers WFC, Bolton Wanderers Walkers, Fleetwood Town Flyers and Grimsby Corinthians/Hull Strollers.
Some strong teams contested this annual event and all the teams did themselves proud on a sunny day at Heywood. Two time previous winners Sheffield WFC just failed to make it a hat trick of wins.

Referees & Organisers Martin Dawson Trophy 2021
It was good to see many old sporting friends we hadn’t seen for almost two years. Paul Gardner couldn’t be with us today so Steve Colesby gave the briefing and after tournament presentation speech. The winners and runners up trophies were presented by Martin’s family who were in attendance. Thanks to our referees today Denis Cudahy, Matt Howells, Bob Ingham, Garry Pearce and Mike Willmore. Also to the HSV staff who helped the day run smoothly.

Thanks to Bill and Steve, the outstanding (again) referees, and everyone involved in making this a really enjoyable days football. From all at Rochdale AFC Walking Football Club
We all enjoyed our experience once more. Was great to play some new teams but more importantly play against teams with a great spirit and balance regarding competition and the ethos of walking football, well done to the players, referees and organisers for a great day. From all at Grimsby Corinthians.
Great report Bill, on a great day of walking football. The Martin Dawson Memorial Trophy is becoming one of the major competitions in the sport, because it attracts many of the best teams who play the game with great skill and spirit. Long may it continue.

Great tournament as usual. Excellent competition, very competent referees and very well organised.
Another excellent day at Heywood this time in sunshine. Some superb football on display and full marks to the referees and organisers for making things go so smoothly.
